Permethrin is the active ingredient in many spot-on treatments and collars for dogs. It works very well in dogs. It is toxic to cats.

Cats do not metabolise permethrin in the same way as dogs. That is why no Dixie antiparasitic for cats contains it: the spot-on treatment contains fipronil, and the repellents contain geraniol.

And that is why, if you have both a dog and a cat at home, where they settle down for a nap matters.

Does my indoor cat need antiparasitic treatment?

The risk is lower, but it is not zero. Fleas enter the home on clothing, shoes or the dog, and lay their eggs where the cat sleeps. If you also have a dog, treat both pets.

Can I use my dog’s spot-on treatment on my cat?

No. Dog spot-on treatments contain a different dose and, in the case of permethrin, an active ingredient that is toxic to cats. Cats have their own spot-on treatment, with fipronil at a dose formulated for cats.

What should I do if my cat has come into contact with permethrin?

Take your cat to the vet as soon as possible and bring the product packaging. To prevent this, keep your cat away from your dog for 72 hours after treating the dog with permethrin.

Can I use dog shampoo on my cat?

Dixie bathing shampoos are suitable for both: there is no separate cat range. The exception is the antiparasitic shampoo, which is for dogs only.

At what age can I start treating a kitten?

With fipronil spot-on treatment, from 9 weeks of age and 1 kg in weight.
