Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about antiparasitics for cats. Figures are taken from the CIMAVET summaries of product characteristics.

Why aren’t dog products suitable for cats?

Because of the dose and, sometimes, the active ingredient. Permethrin, commonly used in dog spot-on treatments and collars, is toxic to cats. No Dixie antiparasitic for cats contains it.

What happens if my cat comes into contact with permethrin?

Your cat could be poisoned. If they have come into contact with a recently treated dog or a dog spot-on treatment, take them to the vet with the packaging. Keep your cat away from the treated dog for 72 hours.

Is fipronil safe for all cats?

It is authorised for cats from 9 weeks of age and 1 kg in weight. Do not use on sick or convalescent cats, or on wounds. Never use on rabbits.

How often is it applied?

The spot-on treatment protects for 4 weeks; allow at least 4 weeks between applications. The repellent collar lasts up to 3 months, according to its packaging.
