Fipronil or permethrin?

Both kill fleas and protect against ticks. The difference is what they do besides that, and whether you have a cat at home. Each pack contains the dose for a specific weight range, and the ranges are not the same for the two active ingredients.

Fipronil

The classic option: kills existing parasites and helps prevent new infestations.

  • Kills fleas and prevents ticks
  • A minimum interval of four weeks between treatments
  • There is a cat version, with its own dosage

Three pack sizes, for 2 to 40 kg

  • From 2 to 10 kg67 mg
  • From 10 to 20 kg134 mg
  • From 20 to 40 kg268 mg

Permethrin

As well as killing fleas and ticks, it is effective against sand flies and mosquitoes.

  • Kills fleas and ticks for four weeks
  • Repels sand flies for one week after each application
  • Insecticidal effect against mosquitoes for three weeks

Two pack sizes, up to 30 kg

  • Under 15 kg715 mg
  • From 15 to 30 kg1.430 mg

Never if you have a cat at home. Permethrin is extremely toxic to cats: keep the treated dog away from them for 72 hours.

Information from the CIMAVET summaries of product characteristics 3370, 3371 and 3372 (fipronil) and 3772 and 3773 (permethrin). If your dog weighs more than 40 kg or is right on a weight-band boundary, follow the instructions in the summary of product characteristics or consult your vet. Prefer prevention without a medicine? Above you will find the geraniol repellents: the spot-on and the combination pack, which contains two spot-ons and a collar.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions before buying a spot-on treatment. Figures are taken from CIMAVET product information.

Which spot-on treatment is right for their weight?

It depends on the active ingredient. Fipronil comes in three packs: 2–10 kg, 10–20 kg and 20–40 kg. Permethrin comes in two: under 15 kg and 15–30 kg. Each pack contains the dose for its weight band, so you cannot split a large spot-on between two small dogs.

How often is it applied?

This also depends on the active ingredient. For fipronil, the summary of product characteristics specifies a minimum interval of four weeks between treatments: efficacy against fleas lasts up to five weeks, and new tick infestations are prevented from day 9 to day 23 after application. With permethrin, each spot-on treatment prevents new flea and tick infestations for up to four weeks.

Can I bathe my dog afterwards?

Do not let your dog get wet or bathe them until at least two days after application. Avoid frequent bathing, as it may reduce efficacy.

Fipronil or permethrin: which should I choose?

Choose fipronil if you only want to kill fleas and prevent fleas and ticks. Choose permethrin if you also want to kill mosquitoes and repel sand flies (1 week per application). If you have a cat at home, permethrin is ruled out: it is extremely toxic to cats.

Can I use a dog spot-on treatment on my cat?

No. Dog spot-on treatments are for dogs only and could cause an overdose in cats. Dixie offers a fipronil spot-on treatment for cats, with its own dose.
